16MnCr5 Case Hardening Steel

16MnCr5 steel suppliers, delivering to the whole of the UK. 16MnCr5 is a low alloy chromium, manganese case hardening steel, available as full bar lengths or cut pieces with delivery to the whole of the UK. When carburised this steel grade gives a hard case with a strong core whilst retaining a degree of toughness. It is suited for applications which require a combination of toughness and wear resistance and is commonly supplied in round bar. As an alternative, 20MnCr5 is also available in a limited range of diameters, please contact our sales team for further details.

Applications

This carburising steel grade is suitable for shafts, gears, pinions, colletts, pins and camshafts and is commonly used in the engineering and automotive industries.

Carbon 0.14-0.19% Chromium 0.80-1.10%
Silicon 0.40% max Manganese 1.00-1.30%
Sulphur 0.035% max Phosphorous 0.035% max

Case hardening will give a hard wear resisting surface combined with a tough core strength. Case hardening temperatures range from 780-820°C, followed by rapid quenching and tempering which will determine the resulting hardness.

When hardening 16MnCr5 heat treatment temperatures, including rate of heating, cooling and soaking times will vary due to factors such as the shape and size of each steel component. Other considerations during heat treatment include the type of furnace, quenching medium and work piece transfer facilities. Please consult a heat treatment specialist for full guidance on heat treatment of 16MNCr5 steel.

16MnCr5 case hardening steel is available with BS EN 10204 3.1 mill certificate, please request with our sales department when placing any orders.
